Shifter rattle
I did a search and all references to rattles from the shifter are associated with the Puma.

I find the shifter rattles when in 4th gear and a little when in 3rd gear. Don't hear anything in 5th. 4th seems to be the loudest and it seems to go away if I put my hand on the shifter itself. Is there maybe a bushing that needs replacing or something needs tightening? What exactly should I be doing (maybe dealt with before that I can't find) as I don't know the source? The rattle is loud enough I can hear it over the engine but isn't particularly annoying at this point but I thought I would ask if there is something I can do to fix it. Thanks again for any and all assistance. 2006 90 originally registered in Italy

Mine does the same, I think its related to the bias springs. But need to investigate when I get around to it. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I was looking on the LR Workshop website, but then I found this: https://www.defender2.net/forum/post944317.html

Last picture on first post by member Hufflepuff shows a small plastic plunger that is pring loaded. That fits into the gear lever ball joint and keeps it from rattling. Like Hufflepuff, mine also flew off when took the housing off... so strongly recommend wrapping a rag or something around the housing when taking it off to contain the spring. I luckily managed to find the spring (have lot of clutter), but the plastic plunger never found. So I just made one from PTFE. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks. I'll have to take the shifter apart when I return from holidays. I'll take all the housing off and take it for a drive to see if I can isolate where the rattle is coming from. But at least I now know where to start looking. 2006 90 originally registered in Italy

Pretty common and irritating rattle. As said above it is a combination of the bias springs not being in contact with the stick through loosening adjustment bolts or wear of the spring arms or gear stick. It could also be wear of the slots in the turret as well. The first step is to pull it apart and stick some thick grease down there, reset the bias springs and see whether the rattle remains.
